Biochemistry is an interdisciplinary science that enables the underst和ing of a simple biological question with perspectives from both biology 和 chemistry. Biological systems are built with inorganic 和 organic compounds, yet biomolecules have evolved to be much more complex than the chemistry on its own. Biochemistry studies the structure 和 functions of biomolecules by interrogating their chemical properties. A deep appreciation on the interactive nature of the molecular world ultimately uncovers the beauty of life.
The biochemistry program is accredited by American Society for Biochemistry 和 Molecular 生物学 和 provides students with a basic underst和ing of living systems that emphasizes the molecular 和 cellular aspects of biology.
A fully equipped biotechnology lab affords cutting-edge research opportunities for students to make discoveries at DNA, RNA 和 protein levels. Equipment includes environmentally controlled growth chambers, Real-time 和 End Point ThermoCyclers, electrophoresis equipment, 凝胶成像系统, 细胞培养罩, confocal fluorescent microscope 和 various microscopes, 等. It provides the technical component for the program. The first-year Rotations give students first-h和 exposure to all available research projects. The junior-senior year of study features independent laboratory research 和 student presenting their own research as the senior capstone.
Advances in the area of molecular biology 和 biochemistry have led to the expansion of job opportunities in the general field of biotechnology 和 bioengineering. The biochemistry program will be of special interest to students with a strong science 和 mathematics background who are preparing for graduate school, 医疗, pharmacy or dental school as well as pharmaceutical or biotechnology positions. Plenty of h和s-on experience in the biochemistry program give students a strongly competitive edge after graduation.
